Statement

I express universal human experiences and lessons through 2D mixed media visual art.

I experimet across various art forms from 2D to 4D and find joy combining different media, techniques, elements, and materials.

I curate thematic connections between individual artworks, creating visually cohesive narratives; often accompanied by a written poem or conveyed through symbolic elements.

Biography

13876346_10201714666305721_4646790031891647316_n_edited.png

I descend from my late mother, the first Yankee on her side of the family after immigarating from Scotland to Connecticut; and my late father, the chef who cooked fresh meals from the garden and whose family home I inherited. I grew up  in a nurturing and loving environment. I was constantly uplifted and celebrated for my skills, talents, and gifts. My mother built my confidence and socialization skills by enrolling me in dance classes as a child. At the age of 3, during my very first tap dance recital, I bravely marched to the front of the stage and filled the room with laughter while tapping my feet, smiling, and sparkling in my turquoise blue and pink feather dress. From there, my passion for dance grew year over year practicing new moves which led to adding dance styles that introduced me to new songs and styles of music. Music introduced me to emotions in a way I could only express through dance and singing into my toy kareoke machine in my girly purple, pink, and princess bedroom. Dance, chior, and theater performances led to years of dance competitions, pre-show/half-time, and public performances that entertained tens to hundereds to thousands of people at a time (I still get butterflies!). As I engaged with my toy easel, my passion for visual arts began to take shape, igniting newfound interests within me. Through drawing and exploring my creative abilities, I discovered a captivating world of artistic expression that continues to inspire me. I honed my artistic abilities through formal art classes in Connecticut's public schools, community college, and the University of Connecticut (UConn). Additionally, my skillset grows as I volunteer for community art projects and events that allow access to real world problem solving skills through fun and beneficial opportunites that serve communities.

Meanwhile, my home state Connecticut ("The Insurance Capital of the World") faced economic challenges and witnessed increasing taxes that forced insurance companies to relocate, resulting in massive layoffs. After my father's unexpected passing, my mother, a 15+ year Senior Internal Life Insurance Wholesaler and sole provider was laid off. Struggling to find comparable work and burdened by illness, I became her caretaker and sole provider. During this time I juggled full-time high school and college studies along with working multiple jobs to manage our nesessary expenses. After my mother's unexpected passing, I found myself inheriting over $100k in debt from the mortgage. Faced with two primary options - selling my home and potentially facing homelessness or representing myself in court during foreclosure mediation/trials, working towards paying $40k to reinstate the loan, then towards paying off my home - I chose the latter. It was a decision fueled by courage and commitment to overcome this financial and emotional hurdle.

While experiencing unexpected hardships I remained steadfast in fulfilling my educational pursuits, meeting work responsibilities, managing my finances, engaging in extracurricular activities, and supporting my community. Though burdened by heartbreak, frustration, and fear, I persevered by strategically crafting backup plans and taking proactive steps and actions to overcome obstacles. The significant lesson I learned from these experiences include how to effectively navigate emotions that often accompany the immense time and energy invested into overcoming obstacles and achieving goals leading to pinacles of success; and the brevity of these moments. I discovered a profound wisdom through embracing the process of creating art that quieted my mind and body, allowing me to grieve and heal to learn the nature of success that self-fulfillment brings. I deeply appreciate the purpose behind every experience and the power of resilience in conquering fears. Gratitude fills my heart for all the memories, lessons, experiences, and the incredible support network that includes friends, family, teachers, mentors, supporters, and donors who lightened the load of my educational and financial challenges. To each and every one of them, I express my heartfelt gratitude and love. Thank you for being a part of my life. ♡

Film

The Power of Words

Awarded Best Editing

2016 Quiet Corner Film Festival

A 5 minute music video style film discusses bullying through the powerful words we use and their impact on others.

The film flashes from scene to scene

as the storyline escalates, the music  speeds up feeling rushed, dazed, and confused. The antagonist sends unclear horrific messages that  disempower, humiliate, and causes the protagonist to spiral. The ending is left as an open interpretation between which path the protagonist takes. Either building strength to stand up for themselves or burdened by fear leaving unresolved issues - which they will have to overcome enventually.

Painting

Man & Woman

Acrylic paint on canvas board.

Experiment with brush strokes. The man's skin texture is stippled with tiny dots shading and the woman's is short to long brush strokes.

Typically feminine energy is represented as the left side of our bodies and masculine energy is the right side. If we put ourselves in the subjects' positions, the woman sits to the left and the man sits on the right. The man rests the left side of his head on a woman's right shoulder. The woman tilts her head to the right towards him almost appearing as if their heads could be touching each other blending and exchanging energy. The man stares straight ahead at the seen viewer. The woman is looking off in the distance to the right at the unseen and casts a shadow of her side profile onto the man's forehead. Their body language and expressions feel peaceful like they are able to rest around and rely on each other as is.

In Nature's Image

Photography.

Mirrored saturated leaves form patterns that point inwards and forming arrows pointing towards the center. The patters show us we are the center of all.

Poem:

"In nature's image

we are ourselves

in nature's eyes

we see ourselves

in nature's touch

we do not connect enough

in nature's ears

we say our wishes

in narure's tounge

we all are one"

remained

untouched by the harshness

of winter

they froze in place

as the soft framing snow melts

the leaves

replenish to green

reminding us

to allow time for growth

even if frozen between"

Leaving the Nest

Intalago on a metal plate.

A bird rests on twig branches and gazes to the right towards the future. The process needed to look to the right requires carving looking to the left, the past. The linework background symbolizes migrations and flight.

Poem:

"I lived here since birth

now others want me out

they try to chop me down

a birdie told me

the ill bird I care for

would be nestless and bone

so I needed to leave

fly on my own

I gathered twigs to build my own

and returned to the nest

reclaiming my home"

I don't want to

Intrusive Thoughts

Photography.

Broken glass shatters diagonally across and outside a white pavement line. The pieces glow reflecting light. The image taunts the viewer who must actively resist intrusive thoughts trying to pick up the pieces for a quick fix. Symbolically sitting in acceptance of the brokenness and self defeat before attempting to put themselves together piece by piece.

Poem:

"I held it together once

but it is no more

I could try to reassemble the pieces

but they're on the floor

I could pick them up

but it would hurt me more

there I lay on the floor"

Quiet Hours

Acrylic paint on canvas.

Experimental black base with a limited palette of yellow, red, and white paint to create light.

A streetlight illuminates the ground below and trunks of trees. The glow dissipates above and below the imagery creating a vignette. The imagery in between becomes a liminal space and seems as it could be on the corner of nearly any street. The trunks of the trees are illuminated a vibrant red and their roots are hidden beneath the concrete. The trees stand opposing the dead wooden utility pole holding the light connecting to other powerlines. The network of man made powerlines contrast the network of tree roots that all depend on each other to survive and maintain their own light, life, and connection to function. Even during quiet hours they talk.
